Superior Motors, Inc. of Orangeburg opened on May 23, 1951 as a used car lot under the name of Star-Mack Motor Company at the intersection of Highway 301 and Highway 601.   It ran as a used car lot until October 20, 1954 when it became Star-Mack Pontiac, Inc.

On December 30, 1958 the Buick franchise was added to the Pontiac and Jeep franchises it already held and the name was then changed to Superior Motors.

On July 5, 1960, Mr. James M. Guthrie came to Orangeburg to became the general manager of Superior Motors on the terms that he would be able to purchase the dealership and by May 2, 1963, James became the owner of the Superior Motors.

James Guthrie was a graduate of the University of North Carolina with a B.S. in Business Administration.   James had worked for General Motors Acceptance Corporation for almost five year after graduating.  He then moved on to become the sales manager for Lexington Motors in Lexington, North Carolina and continued his employment there until he came to Superior Motors.

In an unfortunate accident, the original sight of Superior Motors burned to the ground on January 14, 1964.  Temporary mobile homes were moved onto the lot to operate out of and the service department was moved to a location on Russell Street.  

Business continued until construction of the new site at the corner of Highway 301 and 21 By-pass was completed on April 29, 1964.  

In 1967, the GMC Truck franchise was added. 

Mr. Guthrie and his son, Jimmy Guthrie, have been serving the community with superior new and used cars and trucks, parts and services for over 40 years.  They have built a solid reputation for excellent product and services with ever evolving customer service and satisfaction.
